To burn baby burn baby...Oh oh oh

Summer is a time for laughter, great tropical drinks and receiving a long, overdue dose of Vitamin "D" from the sun. For some of us we have a tendency to overdose on the last one which sometimes is a result of having one to many of the second one. We just completely forget that to much of a good thing is not always good (hangovers will be covered in another episode). 

This past weekend I had the pleasure of teaching yoga at Gratitude Migration. It was magical! Three blissful days of camping on the beach with all the yoga, dancing and happiness one could take. 

It was a scorcher! Leading many to receive the almighty sunburn due to lack of clothing cover. They were looking very similar to Barbie pictured above. 

Sunburns are caused by the sun's UV rays – which do not feel warm. (That's why you can get a sunburn on a cool, cloudy day!) The energy from ultraviolet radiation can damage molecules in the skin, most importantly DNA. The redness is caused by extra blood in the capillaries. Sunburn symptoms thus don't appear until well after exposure. (DNA damage can also result in the destruction of the involved skin cell. This is one of the reasons why skin peels after a bad sunburn.)


I'd like to note that Jin Shin Jyutsu is a wonderful support to anything that arises mentally, emotionally and physically. This is because it balances and harmonizes the energy that has a relationship with all three of those areas. So use this on its own or in conjunction with your Aloe Vera; applying this hold will boost the healing power. I should mention this hold encompasses all burns not just sunburns. 

In the event that you or anyone else in your party forgets to apply sunscreen or reapply it (which I hope you don't) and also forgets the soothing aloe, here's a little helpful hold. It can be your new party trick, I'm sure you'll be everyone's favorite ;)

1. Place the palm of your RIGHT hand on your LEFT calf (fingers face down towards toes)  2. Place the palm of your LEFT hand on your RIGHT calf (fingers face down towards toes)   3.   Hold for at least 20 minutes.   For severe burns hold till symptoms subside. If area is too painful to touch hover the hands above the skin.   4. To do this for others, place yourself at their feet and cross your arms so your RIGHT palm is on their LEFT calf and your LEFT palm is on their RIGHT calf.

P.S. Remember to wear your sunscreen even if its not sunny out. Those UV rays get you when you least expect it.
